The Identity Layoff
The day the title goes away, most people discover how much of them was rented from the employer.

For thirty years, an honest answer to 'what do you do?' was also an answer to 'who are you?'. Retirement severs the two, usually without warning.
The symptoms are predictable: a strange flatness around month four, an over-investment in home projects, an urge to consult 'just a day or two a week'.
The counter-move is to build the successor identity while you still have the original. Not a hobby — a role. Something with a name, other people in it, and a standard you can fall short of.
You want to be able to answer the question with something other than a past tense.
